Rebirth of the Flower Show
by Chelsea Queriones (6A)
Last year, the school organized an unusual , but great event for students to participate – The Flower Show. This event was held in late March 2017 in the School Hall. Kindergarten, primary and secondary students from other schools were welcomed to join it as well.
Before the Flower Arrangement Competition, the school invited a guest speaker to introduce what flower arrangement is. By definition a flower arrangement is an organization of design and color towards creating an ambience using flowers, foliage and other floral accessories. The guest speaker taught us several techniques on Flower Arrangement, for example, anchoring (technique used to secure a stem insertion into a foam by using wood picks) and collaring (technique used when making a collar or a frill surrounding the materials).
During the competition, there were surprisingly a lot of classes from K1 to F5. Students were very creative and well prepared for the event. Firstly, they chose and bought some flowers of their own choice and then they were given themes for their arrangement, namely – The Dancing Blossoms and Dream Come True. After that, they started to design their product. The final product of everyone’s work was not bad, especially for first timers. I thought everyone did very well. Besides that, I think the overall event was well organized and fresh. This event has given students a chance a try and experience a new form of art which isn’t well-known in our school. Therefore, this activity is definitely a new experience for all of us!
We also interviewed Mr. Leung, the overall in-charge of the Flower Show,to know more about the event. First of all, we asked him what the purpose of the event was. He mentioned it was all for students’ leisure. Since this event was introduced to the school more than 20 years ago and the last one took place 10 years ago, he thought it would be a great time to bring it back so as to enhance students’ interests and knowledge towards arts. When we asked him whether or not the overall performance of the event was satisfactory, Mr Leung said he was very satisfied with the performance of the participants. Although he didn’t have any expectations of the students, he was surprised how actively the students participated. As mentioned, the Flower Arrangement event was introduced in our school 20 years ago, so it is quite new especially to our current students. Therefore, Mr Leung plans to hold this event again in the next few years.
